The Cook Islands Office of the Public Service Commissioner

Recognising the importance of this, the Cook Islands Office of the Public Service Commissioner met with Skills Consulting Group at the end of 2015.

The learning need

In any workplace, a well-designed induction programme can help engage new employees from the start and inspire them in the long term.

Recognising the importance of this, the Cook Islands Office of the Public Service Commissioner met with Skills Consulting Group at the end of 2015. The two organisations came together with one goal in mind – to develop a high-quality induction programme for employees working in, or about to enter, the public service in the Cook Islands.

The solution

Skills Consulting Group’s solution combined a proven, existing qualification with complete customisation to the Cook Islands context. The induction programme was based on the equivalent New Zealand qualification, and enhanced to meet the unique requirements of the Cook Islands public service.

Outcomes

  • Nearly 150 public servants took part in the programme between June and August 2016.
  • The Chief Executive Officer of the Office of the Public Service Commissioner has hailed the programme as a “great success”.
  • Meanwhile, the Human Resources Manager says it “has really hit the mark” and that “demand for this training is overwhelming”.

Such is the popularity of the programme that training is currently exceeding capacity, with work underway to meet this demand. Delivery is also being confirmed for the outer islands for the rest of the financial year.

Having met such success in these early stages, the future of the programme – and the careers of Cooks Islands public servants – certainly looks bright.
